Horror Fiction, Horror Literature, or Horror Fantasy is a genre of literature which is intended, or has the capacity, to frighten, scare or startle its readers, or viewers, by inducing feelings of horror and terror. It creates an eerie and frightening atmosphere. Horror can be either supernatural or non-supernatural. Often the central menace of a work of horror fiction can be interpreted as a metaphor for the larger fears of a society. The genre has ancient origins, which were reformulated in the 18th century as Gothic Horror, the largely dominated subgenre of Gothic Fiction. It is widely believed Gothic Horror originated in England in the second half of the 18th century, and its origins attributed to English author Horace Walpole's publication of his 1764 novel The Castle Of Otranto, subtitled in its second edition A Gothic Story.
