Biography & BibliographyBorn: Charles John Huffam Dickens, 7 February 1812, Landport, Hampshire, England
Died: 9 June 1870, Higham, Kent, England Publishing Name(s): Charles Dickens; 'Boz' Charles Dickens created some of the world's most well-known fictional characters and is generally regarded as the greatest novelist of the Victorian period, the literary colossus of his age.
On the supernatural front, many of his ghostly tales were originally published in his periodicals All The Year Round (in which his masterpiece of short fiction, The Signal-Man, first appeared) and Master Humphrey's Clock, as well as The Pickwick Papers and Nicholas Nickleby novels. Interest in supernatural phenomena was high during Charles Dickens' lifetime. He had always loved a good ghost story himself, particularly at Christmas time, and was open-minded, willing to accept, and indeed put to the test, the existence of spirits. His natural inclinations toward drama and the macabre made him a brilliant teller of ghost tales, and in the twenty stories presented here, which include his celebrated A Christmas Carol, the full range of his gothic talents can be seen. Chilling as some of these stories are, Dickens has managed to inject characteristically grotesque comedy as he writeof revenge, insanity, pre-cognition and dream visions, he indulges also in some debunking of contemporary credulity. -amazon.co.uk Read More on wikipedia. |
